The Hunting Tree edition by Ike Hamill Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Your pulse will do the fandango as you read The Hunting Tree Trilogy by Ike Hamill. A breathtaking story, it makes you want to turn the pages as quickly as possible so you can see what happens next to each of the three main characters: the lone survivor of a mass tribal suicide some five thousand years ago; a full-time geneticist and part-time paranormal investigator; and, a sometimes clumsy thirteen year old boy who is besieged by nightmares. As the story twists and turns in totally unexpected ways, you will need to stop occasionally to catch your breath (and maybe check under the bed) before continuing. Masterfully written, this brilliant trilogy braids the three threads into one seamless tale that will haunt you even in the daylight hours. This is yet another remarkable achievement from Ike Hamill, and you will want to delve into his other novels. I highly recommend that you do so.Product details

The Hunting Tree edition by Ike Hamill Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I read Extinct and Instinct before this novel. I thought I had found another Stephen King or Dean Koontz. This novel, written earlier, was disappointing in comparison. The story was pretty good and I did like the characters. However, the author killed off too many main characters. I do not intend to read the sequel to this book. I will most likely read other books by this author, but only the ones that he has written after Extinct and Instinct. I highly recommend those books and gave each one a 5 star rating.
While this is a "trilogy" the whole story only takes up around 350 pages, so I'm only counting it as one book.
Similar to my review of _Knock, Knock_ this book started off really creepy and chilling. I was certain I was in for a nice scary ride by the end of chapter two.
Silly me.
What I did get though was an interesting story akin to the higher-end *average* Stephen King novel a read I enjoyed enough not to regret, but not enough to really care if I read it again.
The book isn't scary again after chapter two (it dances close with 1-2 of the Mike chapters, but falls short). I like the monster's motivation and it's a very Clive Barker-creepy type of monster. My main gripes are that Davey's infection is handled extremely inconsistently and we never find out whether saving him is actually a good thing or whether the monster was right to be hunting him in the first place.
Final score for me B-
The first book of this trilogy was free...and then I HAD to buy the whole thing. The premise is unusual and very interesting. It is a ghost story of sorts, with ancient myths thrown in. One of the main characters actually talks about the authors premise for writing this book to begin with. The only thing I was never really clear on, is where this all takes place. For my personal visualization, that would have been helpful - of course, if I was more familiar with New England that would not have been a problem.
I guess I am going to have to get the next story...)
A band of very early Native Americans follow a shaman off a cliff.
A young boy who lost his father is an unusual specimen, according to his doctor.
A team of paranormal investigators see a long dead teen try to pull a very much alive boy into a river.
This book starts with three basic storylines and it may seem at first that they have absolutely nothing in common, but be patient because they are all inextricably linked.
At the center of the story are two people who will have a dramatic impact on the events that follow. Mike is an expert geneticist whose passion lies in exploring the paranormal. He and Gary, his partner in these explorations, have invented a device that in essence wakes up a supernatural being. Finally they are on the verge of being able to scientifically prove the existence of another realm. Which should be exciting. Unfortunately it won't end up being a good thing. Not at all.
Davey is a young boy who lost his father. He is a fairly typical nine year old boy. He has a best friend, fights with his sister and loves his mom. He is also a dreamer, and what he starts dreaming about is a monster who is coming to kill him. Why? Because Davey, while looking and acting like a typical boy, has something in his blood that is anything but.
The past, present and future are all about to collide in a fury of death and destruction.
This author did an excellent job of ramping up the tension and danger throughout the book. It begins with a ghost story, but when the fur starts to fly it is an unimaginable gore fest that made it nearly impossible for me to stop or even slow down.
Ike Hamill seems to have been born knowing how to write. At least that's my conclusion after reading the majority of his published novels and now finding myself filling in the gaps. I believe that THE HUNTING TREE was his first novel, and except for a few missing words and typos, the writing is as crisp, clear, developed and well-paced as that in his most recent novel, ACCIDENTAL EVIL , by which time his novels no longer contain typos and missing words.
This time Hamill's unique brand of horror links a 5,000 year old native American whose entire tribe commits suicide after which he finds himself neither alive nor dead, a bright and precocious young boy whose blood has strange properties and a team of amateur "ghostbusters" searching for hard evidence of the paranormal. Hamill weaves these three stories into a scary and seamless whole. Hamill has never before been afraid to kill off main characters and it seems that that habit was with him from the get-go. While there is a satisfying conclusion to the novel, there is enough left over for a sequel (BLOOD GHOST) that I have bought but not yet read.
I continue to enjoy Hamill's novels and and constantly surprised by how original all of his plots are. Every author is influenced by the sum total of everything he has read before, but somehow Hamill continues to come up wth completely original ideas.
Recommended.
